Catching Up

Thank you for all of the nice notes and emails asking me where I’ve been. I apologize for being away from writing for so long and for taking a while to respond to emails. I have a “frozen shoulder” as a complication to my surgery and it has been a tough month of physical therapy and chronic pain. Shakespeare said, There never was a philosopher that could endure a toothache, but surely he meant shoulder pain.

But, as you know – it’s hard to stay away from Hemingway for too long! I’ve had some wonderful correspondence with interesting people who will make fascinating interview subjects. As always, there is a lot to look forward to! Some of the topics for future posts include Hemingway’s favorite drinks, and the drinks of his friends and contemporaries, Scott Rossi’s theory and research on Hemingway and his possible lead poisoning, David Lansing’s experiment writing in the style of Hemingway’s Sun Also Rises, and stories from a genuine bull bum Ric Polansky, who was inspired by Hemingway to move from Iowa to Spain over 40 years ago. I also look forward to forthcoming interviews which have been in the works with Sandra Spanier, Hannah Miet, Jim Brasch, and more. And we will continue to get to know Hadley.

As I get better each day, I am organizing my Hemingway work and blog experiences into chapters and preparing for a trip this summer to one of his favorite places. I look forward to following Hemingway and Hadley’s trail and writing about it. I will give you a few hints where I’m starting from:

In this country, the berets are often red
Jake Barnes drank wine from wineskins there –
Hadley did some embroidery there
Thousands have followed in Hemingway’s footsteps to watch grown men dance with bulls in this country

Can you guess?
