Bumby is born! (And the Hemingways sneak out of Toronto)
I have read about Ernest and Hadley’s short time in Canada, but hearing Hadley tell it is even better, especially her details about the powder puffs and the cakes of soap they left behind when they returned to France. Bumby’s real name was John “Jack” Hadley Nicanor Hemingway and he was born on October 10, 1923.

A treasure trove of early info this one. The tapes have a strange effect of ‘you are there’. Great work, Allie!
Wonderful detail—a 2-hr labor w Bumby, chocolate peppermints from EH, the aged nursemaid Mrs. Marchington, and the getaway car taking them to the boat. splendid stuff.
Love these recordings, Allie ! This is the best one yet.
Thanks so much.
Hadley audio is back!! Her recollections as an elderly women bring to life one of the most lovable characters of the Lost Generation saga
I just love listening to Hadley, and her adventures with Ernest! She mentioned St. Louis a couple times in this one. My birthplace. I feel a kinship with Hadley since she was from there too. Great stuff! Glad you’re back, and glad the audios are back!
HAPPY TURKEY DAY ALLIE! ALSO, THE SAME GREETINGS TO EVERYONE THAT LOOKS AT AND ENJOYS THIS BLOG.
ENJOY GNAWING ON THAT LEG ON THANKGIVING….WHATEVER OR WHOMEVER’S LEG THAT IS! LOL!
Thanks Gary – wee had such a nice Thanksgiving week. At the last minute, we decided to visit our son in San Diego. I love road trips and this one was a lot of fun. We packed all of the dinner ingredients in a cooler and drove west. It was an adventure cooking such a big dinner in his tiny apartment kitchen, but it was one of the best Thanksgiving dinners we’ve ever had. It was great to spend some time outside too and I loved walking along the beaches there and getting some sunshine. It was a great way to prepare for December — !

Allie,
You should consider featuring the short story GOD BLESS YOU MERRY GENTLEMEN by Ernest for a Christmas feature in your blog????
Gary
I will be on the hunt for a baby as sweet as this on my next visit in January.

Hadley mentions that the Toronto Star editor that Ernest dislikes so much was John Bone. Actually, the editor he hated was Harry Hindmarsh, the guy who sent him off to interview Lloyd George in New York just as Hadley was about to have her baby.
John Bone was very good to Ernest.
Hi John,
I’m sure you are right about this. It is remarkable how much Hadley does remember, considering how far in the past these events were. She occasionally has trouble with names, which might be the case here.
Thanks for writing! Allie
